In every ensemble, there is a heartbeat, a presence so steady and sincere it quietly binds the whole. For this year’s Jasai Theater Festival, that heartbeat is Sonja Burrus. As a devoted actress, wellness advocate, and founder of Blue Monday Empowerment, Sonja’s life and work are rooted in a divine calling, to heal, to uplift, and to speak truth with grace. Her dreams aren’t small, they’re legacy-sized. She envisions one day owning a Christian-based production company that nourishes both the soul and the stage, while also giving back to the homeless and creating safe spaces for women and girls navigating life’s hardest battles.
What Sonja loves most about being a part of the Jasai Festival isn’t the spotlight, it’s the soil, the community, the sacred ground of creativity where stories are nurtured, voices are honored, and transformation happens. In her words, “Jasai creates a place where I can be both a student and a vessel.”
With a background that spans coaching, ministry, storytelling, and the healing arts, Sonja brings a layered sensitivity to every role she touches. But this year, she’s not just acting, she’s planting seeds, seeds of bold faith, honest vulnerability, and holy purpose.
What is she most looking forward to? Making God proud through her obedience to show up. Because for Sonja Burrus, the stage isn’t just a place to perform, it’s a place to proclaim, to heal, to testify. And this August, her presence will remind us all that purpose doesn’t have to be loud to be powerful. It just has to be lit by truth.
