Some artists don’t just perform; they build stages, invite their communities in, and dare to shift the entire culture. At this year’s Jasai Awards, we are proud to honor Walter DeShields, a powerhouse of purpose, creativity, and legacy in Philadelphia’s arts community.

As Co-Artistic Director of Theatre in the X, Walter is more than an artist; he’s an institution builder, a truth teller, and a visionary educator.

A Dream Bigger Than Fame

Walter’s dream isn’t rooted in stardom; it’s rooted in structure.

“My big dream is to build lasting institutions that center Black storytelling, uplift community truth, and create space for transformation.”

He envisions stages, screens, and classrooms that not only reflect our experiences but also equip the next generation to lead with purpose and pride. While he wouldn’t mind the paycheck, he is not chasing the spotlight.

“I know I'm talented and equipped enough to stand on stage or screen with any actor in the world and add to the believability of the story.”

That confidence is built from decades of experience in his craft.

Rooted in Rhythm, Raised by Story

Growing up in South Philly, Walter’s world was filled with the oral poetry of Black life. He absorbed the lessons from church sermons, barbershop wisdom, and block legends.

“That rhythm of Black life and survival inspired me.”

Theater became his sacred response to this environment. It provides a way to hold space for every emotion, to elevate what often goes unseen, and to honor Black resilience in all its forms.

The Work, The Legacy

Walter holds a B.A. in English and Theater from Penn State. Over the past 20 years, he has merged performance, education, and activism into his life’s work. He co-founded Theatre in the X, which offers professional, free Black theatre in Malcolm X Park. Whether directing, performing, or teaching at Rowan, Drexel, or Eastern Universities, Walter remains laser-focused on one goal: healing and liberation through storytelling.

His work extends beyond the stage. Through the Philadelphia Area Sexual Health Initiative (PASHI), he utilizes theater as a transformative tool. He teaches Black youth about agency, relationships, and wellness with the hope of creating a more informed future.

A Voice on What Needs to Change

Walter doesn’t just celebrate the beauty of Philly’s art scene; he also acknowledges its shortcomings.

“Philadelphia is rich with talent and cultural brilliance, but we still face disparities in access and investment.”

He calls for more than mere inclusion. He advocates for true equity, where Black-led projects are funded, trusted, and elevated, rather than just tolerated.

A Vision for the Future

Walter’s commitment to Black storytelling and community development is only beginning. He has several upcoming projects that will continue to amplify Black voices and experiences.

Upcoming Projects

  • Co-starring in*Fraternity* by Jeff Stetson (this summer at Malcolm X Park)

  • Directing*Ordinary People* (this December at Theatre in the X)

  • Continuing teaching and health advocacy, blending art and wellness for Black and Brown youth

His Mantra

“The place in which I’ll fit will not exist until I make it.” — James Baldwin

This quote isn’t just a mantra; it’s a mission. Walter isn’t waiting for permission. He actively creates new spaces, platforms, and futures for his community.
